A Call For Action- United Nations-Another seat of corruption—the United Nations-

Secretary Guterres has been head of the UN since 2017, having reign to oversee, all of its many resources. Given Secretary Guterres’s was Prime Minister of Portugal for 7 years, prior to that in 1972, he began serving as a member of Portuguese Parliament, which lasted 17 years. While in service, he chaired the Parliamentary Committee for Economy, Finance and Planning, and later the Parliamentary Committee for Territorial Administration, Municipalities and Environment. From 2005 to 2015 he was the United Nations’ High Commissioner for Refugees. These were not all of his positions and chairs held throughout his long administrative history. So with all this experience, and all of the resources at leadership’s disposal as Secretary General, why then? Why is war still such a human tragedy for innocent civilians?

Clearly it’s not a simple task getting people out of combat areas but when there are out, that’s when another tragedy often begins. Currently, May 2022, as I am writing this article, over 5 million are already out of harm’s way of bombardment in Ukraine. So where are all of these people? Are 1 billion volunteering people across the globe helping to facilitate getting these traumatized citizens resettled? I wonder, don’t you? Just how organized is the UN volunteer program? Haven’t you ever wondered? The office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was created in 1950, after the Second World War, to help millions of displaced Europeans. Now over 70 years later, how can it be, that we still do not mobilize and manage this type of catastrophe with more transparency and more effective leadership? How can this be? UN World leaders surely must be held for accountable for the math and detailed reporting to the citizens of the world. But are they?

When visiting the UN Volunteer website, it’s hard to find a current fact-sheet for what they have done for Ukraine in the past few months. I did find a number on the aid given to Ukraine from 2015 to present, which was over 400 tons of food, tents and bedding and emergency supplies. As of May 2022, another 2 tons of such aid has been delivered. Where are all of these millions of Ukrainian people going to settle? Why doesn’t the UN website offer more detailed information that could facilitate getting people around the globe paired up with a disenfranchised family. Why is there so much useless bureaucracy that stands in the way of progress? While researching the statistics, I noticed this newsflash from 15 hours ago; Nearly 16 million people now are reported to be in need of humanitarian assistance within Ukraine. After his appeal to Putin, Secretary-General António Guterres had warned that “the entire international system” was “being tested” by the Ukraine crisis. I wonder why, in light of the amount of refugees in the past 20 years alone, why is the UN still “being tested”?

Now the UN is asking for additional 1.7 billion in relief funding to add to the 109 million already received to help Ukraine. If they receive this much money shouldn’t they provide a detailed plan to the citizens of the world? If there is a plan, can global citizens read it? Where can it be found? The Secretary-General’s online UN bio states, “he is determined to make human dignity the core of his work, and to serve as a peace broker, a bridge-builder and a promoter of reform and innovation”. Do you see innovation? It’s over 70 years of the plight of the disenfranchised with no true innovative methods emerging for rebuilding lives. I agree with reform at the UN, starting with leadership. All of these time consuming summits which often result in political immobilization truly frustrates the world. And peace brokering, yes, but peace with plan of action. Let world citizens see deals for land territories for new settlements, that would be useful brokering!

The world is weary of the squandering of resources when its greatest resource is being crushed, the human being. Our leaders have had decades to formulate a better plan of action. People must mobilize their minds into asking for more from global leadership. We cannot expect more if we do not demand more. In closing, I am aware that Secretary Guterres is merely one man but he holds one powerful position which answers to the whole world. The measure of success is results. We must strive towards the result of “zero” civilian causalities of war but we cannot arrive there without well-devised plan of action. The senselessness of warfare is what must become apparent to all citizens, the avoidance of hostile engagement is the only true solution, as only peace provides a real future for people. Let there be a world wide call for action to the United Nations. Do not settle for lesser results than your appointment demands, start really mobilizing all of the people around the world who are volunteering.

Update:

I fear for the lives of the half a million Ukrainians which have been taken as prisoners into Russia. How will these innocent people be treated? The Holodomor, of 1932 to 1933 that killed 7,811,000 Ukrainians, has been recognized by the world community as a genocide against the Ukrainian people carried out by means of famine. The plan was devised and executed by Soviet leader Joseph Stalin in 1929. This forced Ukrainians to relinquish their land, personal property, and sometimes housing. The aggressive Soviet plan of Agricultural Collectivization, under Stalin, led to a drastic drop in food production, the disorganization of the entire Ukrainian rural economy, resulting in the widespread food shortages. The one word that describes this action could only be, evil. It’s estimated that more Ukrainians died during the “Terror Famine” than during the equally horrific Holocaust. So, what will happen now to these already persecuted people?

This is not 1929, it’s 2022, nearly a century later, evil aggression still exist but mind control cannot last too much longer within the borders of oppressive countries. We’re on the brink of game-changing progress across the globe, secret technology is about to surface and the scales of justice will be shaken but then balanced. We are all part of creating this balance, every single thought of compassion and righteousness for the sake of the sanctity of human life, is counted in the Universe. Choose your thoughts carefully and know that there are existential consequences. Use your mind power to assist this shift of humanity into the balance for which we were created. We are able to create a balance within our global society, every moment a little closer to the realization of the meaningful purpose of life itself. Let a new world chapter be written, one that enables the spirit of our human society to master all iniquity.

  5. Good to see the people demand the UN to get the victims out of the Steel Plant! If enough people keep pressure on the UN they will finally step up and aggressively meet the need which was caused by the aggressive actions of Russia’s leader.

  6. The biggest problem is that parties on the losing side of a conflict often want to keep civilians in the war zone in order to limit the tactical options of the other side. Many times in history the losing party has withdrawn from urban areas to avoid destruction and protect their own people (Paris in World War II is an example), but modern tactics actually encourage fighting in urban areas. Indeed, the NATO trainers have been using teaching the Ukrainian forces the tactics that were used against the US in places like Iraq. When it’s used against you that’s called “human shields”, but I guess when you’re on the other side it’s called a barbaric assault on civilians. As for the UN, it does what it can, but it is limited by the agreements of the parties involved and, absent SC approval, very limited options for intervention. Even when out of the war zone, what the UN can do is limited to what the host governments authorize. Could the UN do better? Absolutely – the UN bureaucracy is legendary. But having worked with UN agencies for many years, it is an incredibly frustrating system that isn’t always their fault. In this case, my sense is that the host governments don’t want to let the UN operate anyway; it would be a major embarrassment for a Western government like Poland to allow UNHCR to set up and operate centers on their own soil. It would require them to acknowledge they can’t handle it, and give up some sovereignty and control.

    • Thank you for your thoughts, I agree with you that the UN does do what it can, but falls short, considering all the facets. We live in an age that demands innovators. It’s no longer sufficient for any organization which has the global reach the UN does, towards peace, to become complacent.

      Best-
